This role would suit an experienced, food safety or technical officer looking to flex their muscles by joining an exciting, rapidly growing, values-based, sustainable business blazing the way in the evolving ag-tech industry. The role will provide the right candidate with the opportunity to build upon our current food safety standards, and establish the foundation for compliance and food safety structures in new sites as the business grows. In addition, this role provides the unique opportunity to work closely with Senior Leadership to build out the business’ sustainability compliance structure and procedures.


At this stage, we anticipate the technical manager will spend 3-4 days per week ensuring and improving site food safety compliance. The remaining days per week will be spent building upon our sustainability ethos by documenting our sustainability compliance processes and leading on sustainable projects.


Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and measures:


General Food Safety & Quality responsibilities:

Manage site food safety and quality standards, ensuring compliance at all levels of the business. Lead on external audits including but not limited to: BRC, Field to Fork, and Red Tractor.  Regularly review food safety and quality protocols and recommend improvements. Work with Senior Management, Operations Manager, Grower and production team to implement improvements effectively and cohesively.


Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and measures:

Implementation and management of compliance standards and HACCP procedures
Maintain HAACP ensuring it is reviewed according to schedule or with any changes to operations
Manage relationships with third parties such as advisors, vendors, primary authority, external auditors etc.
Lead on external audits and close-out any raised non-conformances
Manage microbiological testing processes and matrix, track results and analyse the trends
Evaluate current testing protocols and recommend improvements
Make ongoing recommendations based on micro trends and work with Operations Manager to implement improvements to production processes
Evaluate current sanitation procedures and recommend improvements
Create documents as needed and ensure that documents are being utilized accurately and reflect current processes and methodology
Conduct internal audits including auditing the records of operators to ensure they are accurately conducting checks at the required frequency.
Conduct investigations where appropriate (e.g. customer complaints, accidents and incidents) and ensure that necessary actions are taken and communicated to necessary stakeholders
Attend regular Operations Meetings and report on any compliance or food safety concerns.
Attend senior level meetings and report on the food safety and compliance health of the site
Complete due diligence paperwork on new suppliers and new starters
Escalate food safety concerns and non-compliance issues to Operations Manager
Interface with retail and food services customers
Work with GU account managers to ensure product complies with customer specific requirements
Keep up to date on policy changes and proactively highlight where these will impact operation

General Sustainability Compliance responsibilities

These responsibilities will include reviewing current sustainability documents and working with Senior Leadership to build our Environmental Management System.


In addition, responsibilities will include:

Proactively identifying and suggesting improvements for sustainable improvements to business practices
Maintain records on sustainability compliance
Keeping up to date on environmental policies and regulations
Research and submit applications to sustainable certification bodies
Keep up to date on advancements in the sustainability sector, and suggest methods of adoption

The ideal candidate will have:

Demonstrated interest in sustainability and the fresh produce industry
Demonstrated interest in making an impact in the world
Comprehensive understanding of GMP and advanced knowledge of hygiene standards
HAACP Level 4 desired
Food Safety Training Level 4 desired
Experience in site and food safety compliance on a fresh produce site
Experience leading internal and external audits (BRC required)
Highly knowledgeable about HSE and due diligence
Continuous improvement experience
Passionate about sustainability
Knowledgeable of up to date sustainability issues, particularly in the reporting space
