San Sebastián 1 of 3: Hola!

Last week myself (Richard) and my girlfriend Jerina took a long weekend in San Sebastian where we sampled some wonderful food (and thanks to Airbnb stayed right bang in the centre of the hustle and bustle of the old town!) On landing we threw down our suitcase and headed out for the pintxos covered bars – some of which had already been recommended prior by a San Sebastián friend but to be honest they were all good. Atari Gastroteka one of our faves, where you can sit on the steps of the magnificent Santa Maria del Cora church sipping rioja whilst munching a cucumber wrapped parcel of brie, lambs lettuce, sunblush tomatoes and quince sprinkled with crispy onions or blue cheese topped with crystallised ginger and walnut or a sumptuous goats cheese salad (ok for us; replace the word ‘or’ with ‘and’!)

We later returned for the delicious ‘pulpo’ speciality that is: octopus served with traditional Spanish salty smoked paprika potatoes, vegetables and houmous washed down with the smoothest Rioja. The popular standing-room-only bar Borda Berri served up ‘nose to tail’ tapas of veal cheek and pigs ear! Bar La Cepa also kept luring us back with its iberique jambon and amazing salads. You could never go hungry in San Sebastián the food is healthy, fresh and tasty with high quality rioja just £2 a glass (rude not to then!). A beautiful, charming, historic place full of atmosphere with friendly people and a beautiful beach what more could you want? Maybe just an award winning tortilla? Oh wait…
